Gulf Coast Housing Partnership Breaks Ground on Historic Rehabilitation of 67 Homes in Jackson

On April 16, Gulf Coast Housing Partnership (GCHP) and community partners broke ground on Leonard Court, the historic rehabilitation of 67 homes in Jackson’s Farish Street neighborhood—once the largest economically independent African American community in Mississippi.

Originally built between 1860 and 1950, the homes had fallen into disrepair over the years. The $29.8 million investment will restore the residences to reflect the neighborhood’s historic charm while incorporating modern conveniences.

Once completed, Leonard Court will offer a mix of single-family and duplex-style homes with one to four bedrooms. Residents will enjoy amenities including washers and dryers, smart thermostats, indoor security systems, and shared community spaces such as a clubhouse and gazebo.

All homes will be reserved for residents earning less than 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI).

Funding support for Leonard Court was provided by the Mississippi Housing Corporation, Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Mississippi Regional Housing Authority VI, Cadence Bank, Hunt Capital Partners, Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta, and United Bank.

The contractor for Leonard Court is Grant Ethridge Construction, and the architect is Belinda Stewart Architects, PA.
