GCHP partnered with the City of New Orleans and the Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard Merchants and Business Association to improve the neutral ground located on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard and South Rampart Street. In 1976, eight years after King’s assassination, a bronze monument honoring King was placed at the site, designed by artist Frank Hayden. The redevelopment included cleaning the statue, adding informational signage and revising the statue base so that it could be closer to the ground and easier to view. A walking path, lighting, benches and landscaping were also added.
